Alice - Teddy Bear

The teddy bear was constructed with a solid gold body, while the arms and legs were individually articulated using sections of 3mm jump rings. Achieving the necessary movement on such a small scale proved exceptionally difficult. The amount of soldering required around the delicate joints, combined with the substantial gold components, meant there was very little margin for error. On more than one occasion, the jump rings melted during the process, requiring me to start sections again to achieve the standard I was aiming for.

Although the finished piece has an unusual character, the customers adored it and affectionately named it “Alice”. A few years after completing the commission, one of the women sadly passed away. Her partner later returned wearing the pendant and shared how much it had meant to them both. Knowing that a piece I created became such a treasured symbol of their love and memories is something I will never forget.

This project reminded me that jewellery is often about far more than precious materials or design—it can become a lasting connection to the people and moments that matter most.
